Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking - Grade 5 Winthrop
As a review to help students study for an upcoming unit test, fifth graders created instructional videos explaining different strategies and algorithms. We did this during math workshop time, when students rotate through various teacher- directed and independent stations. The videos were created with iPads from the math lab. We received these iPads through a FEOFFE mini-grant two years ago.

Communication, Critical thinking - Grade K Winthrop Kindergarteners used Chatter Pix and Chatter Pix Kids to show what they know about place value and the tricky teens. They selected a number card (1120) and built the number using a ten frame. Then they took a picture of it. Next they animated the picture by drawing a mouth and recording their voice to explain the tens and ones.

8th grade Spanish: Tracking Student Growth through Google Voice

When students walk into Mrs. Reed’s 8th grade Spanish class on the first day of school we do an activity to find out how much Spanish they might already know.   Many know the colors, numbers 1-10, the greeting “hola” and sometimes a slang word.  Since that first day students have made tremendous growth in their speaking abilities in Spanish.  I have been so impressed that I wanted to have an aural record of their growth.  I also wanted the students to appreciate how far they have come.  To do this I started using Google Voice to keep an aural journal/record of their progress.

As part of the final unit in Mr. Krieger’s American Government class, students are put into teams to develop a strategy for a U.S. presidential campaign.  Each team creates a political party and collaborates on several elements of the campaign.  While working together, each team member has a specific role.  The Media Specialist is responsible for designing and recording a 30 to 60-second television commercial.  Similarly, the Communications Director chief responsibility is designing a campaign website.  Here are some examples from one of Mr. Krieger’s 2014-15 classes.
